Hougang United FC

The Hougang United Football Club is a Singaporean football club, currently playing in the S. League. 2006 saw the Marine Football Club Sengkang Punggol Football Club result of a merger of the clubs Paya Lebar Punggol Football Club and Sengkang, the 2011 season it was renamed to its present name. The club plays its home games at Hougang Stadium.

Club history

Marine Castle was one of the predecessor clubs Sengkang Punggol and was founded by residents of the district Marine Parade 1981. All the founders of the club were fans of Newcastle United, which is why they decided to name the club Marine Castle United.

Successes of the club at senior level to 1995 were hardly available. Nevertheless, applied in 1995 for one of the eight places in the new S.League. The request was rejected by the FAS. After successes in the FA Cup in 1995 and winning the unofficial National Football League in 1996, the club competed again for a place in the S.League. This time the request was granted and Marine Castle was next to Gombak United new member of the S.League. In 2002, the club changed its name to Sengkang Marine Football Club. The Sengkang in the name was added to attract more fans from the neighboring district. With No. 8 in 2002 succeeded the highest ever placing in the league. The result from the previous year could be repeated in 2003. However, the club was eliminated at the end of the season for financial reasons from the S.League.

Paya Lebar Punggol FC joined the S.League in 2005 and ended his first season in 10th place in the following year, Paya Lebar Punggol and Marine Castle got together and merged ultimately to today's club Sengkang Punggol Football Club. Since the merger, the club finished in 11th place at the end of each season.
