Howard C. Hickman

Howard C. Hickman ( born February 9, 1880 in Columbia, Missouri, † December 31, 1949 in San Anselmo, California ) was an American actor, director and screenwriter.

Life and career

Through contacts with producer Thomas Ince Harper the successful theater actor from Missouri came into the film business and played first predominantly lead roles. In civilization, a major silent film directed by Ince (1916 ), Hickman played the lead role of Count Ferdinand. Between 1915 and 1921, Hickman operated even with 19 films as director and wrote in two of his films also wrote the screenplay.

Beginning of the 1920s, he moved again to the theater business back and played until 1928 back film roles, although he no longer has it past small to medium supporting roles. He played mostly as a character actor governors, doctors or lawyers embodied. He is best known today for his brief appearance probably blown as plantation owner John Wilkes in the Wind. Overall, Hickman had around 270 film appearances 1912-1944 and was therefore a busy performer, even though many of his roles were very small in later years.

Hickman was involved on the board of Screen Actors Guild. He was with the actress Bessie Barriscale (1884-1965) married, with whom he also starred in several films. They had one son. Howard C. Hickman died New Year's Eve 1949 around one and a half months before his 70th birthday, of a heart attack and was buried in the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.
