Howard Newby

Sir Howard Newby CBE ( born December 10, 1947) is a British sociologist and currently Rector ( Vice-Chancellor ) of the University of Liverpool. His specialty is social change in rural areas of England. For several years he worked for the British government as an agent for social and economic development of rural areas.

Life

Sir Howard Newby grew up in Derby (Derbyshire ). He attended school in Etwall and then as a fellow Atlantic College in Wales. From 1967, he studied sociology at the University of Essex and graduated with a BA and PhD. In sum, he remained there for 21 years. From 1980 to 1983 he was Professor of Sociology and Rural Sociology at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. After his return to Essex, he became in 1983 Dean of the Faculty for Comparative Studies ( comparative studies ). At the same time, he became head of the Records of the Social Science Research Council, a national organization for the storage and distribution of computerized data for researchers in the private and public sector. From 1988 to 1994 he was chairman of the now restructured and renamed the Economic and Social Research Council Research Agency. In 1994 he returned to the University. He was until 2001 Rector ( Vice Chancellor ) of the University of Southampton. During this time he was 1999-2001 president of Universities UK, the Association of British universities. From 2001 to 2002 he was president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. In October 2001, he was appointed Chairman of the Higher Education Funding Council for England ( HEFCE ). Subsequently, he was rector in 2006 ( Vice Chancellor ) of the University of the West of England ( UWE). After less than 15 months at UWE, was announced in July 2007 that he assumes the position of Vice - Chancellor of the University of Liverpool in September 2008.

Newby was in 1995 appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to the Economic and Social Sciences and in 2000 defeated for his contributions to higher education knighted. He is also a member of the Railway Heritage Committee.
