Howe Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo

Howe Peter Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo KP, PC ( born May 18, 1788 in London, † January 26, 1845 in Tunbridge Wells ), was an Irish nobleman and colonial governor. It led to 1800 the courtesy title Viscount Westport from 1800 to 1809 those of the Earl of Altamont.

Howe Browne was the son of John Browne, 1st Marquess of Sligo. He studied at Eton College and Jesus College, and he was awarded in 1808 the degree of Master. 1809 after the death of his father he was Marquess of Sligo and on 11 November 1809 he was admitted to the Order of Saint Patrick. Howe Browne was a friend of George Gordon Byron and Robert Peel. In 1810 he visited Lord Byron in Greece and together they traveled from Athens to Corinth. From there he went to Veli Pasha of Morea, where he also met the British adventurer Hester Stanhope. Veli Pasha gave him permission to dig at Mycenae. Howe Browne removed the half-columns on the Treasury of Atreus, for which he and Veli Pasha were later accused of vandalism of ancient monuments. On the ship Pylades he let his more than 1,000 archaeological artifacts to Ireland to disembark.

On March 4, 1816 he married Hester Catherine, daughter of John de Burgh, 13th Earl of Clanricarde. 1834-36 he was Governor-General and Vice - Admiral of Jamaica. He was a member of the Privy Council and the Privy Council of Ireland.

He was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery. The village Sligoville of Jamaica is named after him.
