The HTC HD2, HTC internal codename Leo, is a smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. Supportive you can use most functions on the in-house user interface HTC Sense, which is, so to speak about the actual operating system Windows Mobile as "Skin". HTC Sense was developed because the now outdated Windows Mobile, has been designed for use with pen-driven PDAs and thus was not optimal for finger control to capacitive touch screens. The Windows Mobile user interface is used only for rarely used settings of the phone, for example, when searching for information, or to download apps from the in-house Microsoft Marketplace. The HD2 is the first Windows Mobile phone that has a capacitive touchscreen and supports multi-touch.

In addition to the included Windows Mobile Google Android operating system and the new Windows Phone 7 can be installed as a so-called Custom Rom on the device. The developers at XDA -Developers have been working for shortly after the release of the HD2 with the very open platform of the device. Here, however, one should make sure that the manufacturer's warranty no longer exists for a Custom -ROM installation. However, this can be restored with an official Rome. Android is available in various versions (from 2.0 - 4.4) exist, which are either started directly from the SD card parallel to Windows Mobile, or replace the so-called NAND version Windows Mobile completely. With the current version of Windows Phone 7, it is even possible to fully take advantage of the Live services and the Market Place.

Since 21 October 2010, the successor model HTC HD7 is commercially available, which comes with the new Windows Phone 7 operating system. This closed operating system but rated differently by the press due to its strong constraints compared to the HD2 Windows Mobile.
