Huangbo Xiyun

Huangbo Xiyun (Chinese黄 檗 希 运, Pinyin Huangbo Xiyun, W.-G. Huang -po Hsi- yun, Japanese Obaku Kiun; † 850 ) was one of the largest Chinese Chan master Linji Yixuan and teachers of (Jap. Rinzai Gigen ) and thus also a pioneer of the Chinese Linji Chan and the Japanese Rinzai Zen.

From a young age he left his parents and went to the mountain Huangbo in a monastery. Among his teachers were Baizhang Huaihai and Nansen Fugan. Huangbos doctrine of " one spirit " in a very concise and simple formulations containing the essence of Zen. Huangbo Xiyun and his temple Wanfu -si (万 福寺) be in Japan to name the donors Obaku school and the temple Mampuku -ji.
