Hubert Léonard

Hubert Léonard ( born April 7, 1819 in Liege, † May 6, 1890 in Paris) was a Belgian violinist and composer.

Life

Hubert Léonard received his first lessons from his father and private lessons with Auguste Rouma (1802-1874), he made his debut in 1832 in Liege. Thereafter, he studied with François Prume in Brussels and from 1836 to 1839 by François -Antoine in Paris Habeneck violin, harmony and composition, before he traveled following the call of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig. He was an excellent teacher and connoisseur of German musical life in him. In the Gewandhaus in 1845 his first violin concerto was performed under Mendelssohn, whose Violin Concerto aufführte in Berlin in E minor Léonard 1846. With his compatriot Henri Vieuxtemps linked him since 1841 a close friendship.

From 1845 to 1848 he undertook concert tours throughout Europe, in 1853 he became professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels as the successor of Charles- Auguste de Bériot. In 1866 he settled down after an argument with the director of the Conservatory, François- Joseph Fétis in Paris, where worked as a soloist, composer and teacher. In the time of the Franco-German War 1870-1872 he taught at the Liège Conservatory. Known students were also derived from Liege Martin Marsick and César Thomson (1857-1931), and Henri Marteau (1874-1934), Frantz Jehin - Ovide Musin Prume and or the Canadian Alfred De Sève.

The work of Léonard 's was inspired by the classic spirit of his time, the elegance and sensitivity that characterized Mendelssohn. Léonard wrote five violin concertos ( Op. 10, 14, 16, 26 and 28), chamber music, about 10 Fantasies, numerous didactic works and cadenzas for violin concertos.
