Hugh Cavendish, Baron Cavendish of Furness

Richard Hugh Cavendish (usually only Hugh Cavendish ), FRSA ( born November 2, 1941) is a conservative British politician and landowner.

Hugh Cavendish attended Eton College in Windsor and worked from 1961 to 1971 in the banking industry. In 1978, he was the High Sheriff of Cumbria. In 1988 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, he was appointed in 1990 as Baron Cavendish of Furness, of Cartmel in the County of Cumbria for Life Peer. From 1990 - 1992 he was a Lord in Waiting, the Chief Whip of the Government in the House of Lords.

Hugh Cavendish is married with Grania Mary Caulfield since 1970 and has three children.

Since Lord Frederick Richard Cavendish, a son of William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire, the Cavendish family lives in Holker Hall Cark -in- Cartmel in Cumbria. Hugh Cavendish is third in the succession of the Duke of Devonshire. For family-owned part of extensive land, which includes inter alia, the racecourse of Cartmel Racecourse. Hugh Cavendish, together with his wife Chairman of Cartmel Steeple Chase ( Holker ) Limited, which operates the racecourse. Likewise he is with his wife, the chairman of the slate production from Burlington Slate, which is also a part of the family property.

Hugh Cavendish is president of the South Cumbria Rivers Trust, a nonprofit organization that strives to protect the rivers in the south of Cumbria.
