Duke of Devonshire

Duke of Devonshire is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of England, which is led by the family of Cavendish. It is named after the county of Devon in South West England.

The Cavendish family is a noble family in England since the 16th century. The family seat is Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. In addition, the Bolton Abbey and Lismore Castle in County Waterford include family, in the Republic of Ireland. Earlier family seats were also Londesborough Hall, Yorkshire, Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire, and as a town house in London Devonshire House, Piccadilly.

Award

The title was awarded in 1694 to William Cavendish. This was a supporter of William III. during the Glorious Revolution. He was then Lord Steward at the court of William.

Subordinate title

The great-grandfather of the first Dukes, William Cavendish, was an uncle of Arabella Stuart, who reached that the title of Baron Cavendish of Hardwick, he was awarded in 1605. In 1618, he was charged for his services to the colonization of Virginia to the Earl of Devonshire. Both titles are now run as the subordinate title of Dukes.

The title of Marquess of Hartington was in 1694 awarded simultaneously with the Dukedom, he is also performed as a subordinate item. All of these titles are in the Peerage of England.

1858 was the title of the Duke of Devonshire on to William Cavendish, 2nd Earl of Burlington, a grandson of the youngest son of the fourth Duke. His grandfather had in 1831 the title Earl of Burlington and Baron Cavendish of Keighley, was in the County of York, granted. Both Would that belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom, were the connection to subordinate titles of the Dukedom.

The eldest son and heir of the Dukes bears the courtesy title Marquess of Hartington, the eldest son of the Earl of Burlington those. His son, that is the great-grandson of Duke, holds the title Lord Cavendish.

Another title

The fifth Duke inherited from his mother in 1754, the dignity of a Baron Clifford, which was created in 1628 in the Peerage of England. After the sixth Duke died childless in 1858, was this song which can also be inherited through the female line, in limbo. This condition persists until today.
