Louisa Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire

Louise Friederike Auguste von Alten (* November 15, 1832 in Hannover, † July 15, 1911 in Cannes) was descended from the Count's line of Hanoverian noble family of old.

At 20, she married the English nobleman William Montagu, 7th Duke of Manchester, by whom she had five children. From 1858 to 1859 she was Mistress of the Robes (top maid of honor ) of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. As a 60 - year-old widow, she married her second husband, the English nobleman and influential politician Spencer Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire, with whom she had an affair many a long year.

Luise von Alten was in English society of the Victorian era as a legendary beauty. Socially and politically ambitious, they held an influential salon and gave elaborate "house parties". Some contemporaries the "Double Duchess" was how Louise was named after her second marriage, considered one of the most influential people outside the government.
