Hugh V, Count of Maine

Hugo V. of Maine (French: Hugues, † 1131 ) was from 1069 to 1093, a Count of Maine from the house Este. He was a son of the Marquis Alberto Azzos II of Este and Garsendes of Maine, a daughter of Count Herbert I. Dog Ringer of Maine.

In the year 1069 rose the citizens of Le Mans and some of the barons of the county against the Norman domination of Maine. After they had sealed off the southern border of Normandy and expelled the Normans, they called Hugo as a descendant of the ancient county house in the country and proclaimed him to the Count. With the support of his father and of Count Fulk IV of Anjou, he managed to stick to 1073. But then he was sold by William the Conqueror, but could after his death in 1087 once again seize control of Maine. Now, however, Hugo was in a constant battle against William's son Robert shorts, which he gave up in 1093. Hugo was in 1071 married to a daughter of Robert Guiscard, the Norman rulers of Puglia.
