Hugo Theorell

Axel Hugo Theodor Theorell ( born July 6, 1903 in Linköping, Östergötland, Sweden, † August 15, 1982 in Stockholm, Sweden) was a Swedish biochemist.

Life

The study of medicine at the Karolinska Institute concluded Hugo Theorell 1924 from. He spent the next three months with the study of bacteriology at the Pasteur Institute in Paris with Albert Calmette. In 1930 he successfully completed his doctorate and was immediately afterwards a professor in physiological chemistry at the Karolinska Institutet.

The focus of his research was the vitamin research. He provided important work on electrophoresis and enzymes, especially catalase, riboflavin, and cytochrome c. In 1934, he remained as a scientific guest at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Cell Physiology in Berlin- Dahlem (Director: Otto Warburg ) and published in this period, several studies.

In 1953, he discovered to combat tuberculosis antibiotic. In 1955 he was awarded for his discoveries about the nature and mode of action of oxidation enzymes with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. 1966 election as a corresponding member of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
