Hume Dam

The Hume Lake is a large reservoir on the Murray River in Australia. It lies on the border between Victoria and New South Wales and is branched into many side arms. Besides the two nearly 40 km long main branches, the Murray River and Mitta Mitta River which, also some smaller river from the Hume Dam ( Hume Dam ) be stowed here. Dam and lake are named after Australian explorer Hamilton Hume. The twin cities of Albury - Wodonga is located west in the vicinity; Wodonga is located in Victoria, while Albury is located in New South Wales. On the shore of the lake the places Tallangatta, Bonegilla and Bell Bridge are (all in Victoria).

The dam consists of reclaimed rock, covered with clay and earth. He has a spillway concrete. The dam is 51 m high, 1616 m long and carries a street. The dam was constructed within twelve years from 1919 to 1931 several thousand workers. In the 1950s it was extended, the location of Tallangatta was completely relocated. He turned eight miles further up at a new location west again.

The hydroelectric power plant at Dammfuß provides 50 megawatts of peak demand.

The Lake Hume is the lowest large reservoir on Murray. From it can be provided for irrigation purposes fastest water. The water content of the reservoir decreases in each March, typically a third of the capacity and fills up to November usually at least up to two-thirds again. This may vary from year to year because the climatic conditions in Australia are unpredictable.

The monitoring of the dam found in the 1990s that water pressure and seepage had caused a slight shift of the dam on its foundation. Might have compromised for fear of a collapse, the Albury - Wodonga, repair work was performed. The dam was reinforced with a second dam. A few dozen workers were only needed for this work.

The lake is rich in fish. Most species are introduced, for example, " European perch " ( Redfin ) and trout. For leisure, recreational water skiing is driven and there are several resorts around the lake that offer equipment for fishing and water skiing.
