History

Tallangatta was founded in the 1870s; the first post office opened on May 15, 1871.

After the construction of the railway, the town served as the gateway to the Mitta Mitta River and valleys of the upper Murray River (in terms of the Murray River, just to the extension of the railway line as far as Cudgewa ). The late 19th century and early 20th century there were in the city a number of gold and tin mines. Of this we see today, however - quite in contrast to the neighboring Beechworth - only slightly. Initially, the gold mining was profitable, but then it turned out that the deeper deposits along with gold and other metals contained. The extraction method had not yet developed so that the gold recovery under these circumstances would have been profitable.

Since that time, Tallangatta is primarily an agricultural center. Since the beginning of the 20th century there was a butter factory. Improved road connections ensured in the 1970s, but for the decommissioning of both the factory and the railway terminal. Center of the dairy industry is today Tangambalanga, about 15 km west of the city.

Perhaps the most interesting historical aspect is the relocation of the city around 8 km to the west in the 1950s, which allowed an enlargement of Lake Hume. On April 14, 1955, the post office was in Tallangatta ' Tallangatta East ' and renamed in the rebuilt city was a new post office.

The routes of the streets in Old Tallangatta are still clearly visible on Google Earth today.

Tallangatta Tomorrow Project

Tallangatta was subject to some significant changes that had a significant impact on the city and the community in the last 60 years. The biggest change in recent years was the retreat of the shoreline of the reservoir ( lack of water ). This led to a decline in tourism and fewer settlements of shops and individuals. The main road is relatively long for a city of its size and because of the withdrawal of business life there are many buildings in need of renovation. However, there is also a plan to bring back with a renovation concept new life in the city.
