The rural community Húnavatn ( Isl Húnavatnshreppur ) is located in northwestern Iceland in the region Norðurland vestra.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 428 inhabitants. The seat of the municipality is in Blönduós.

Geography

The area extends in a southeasterly direction from the easy Húnafjörður, a part of the great Húnaflói Bay up to the highlands to the glacier Hofsjökull. In the south Hveravelir, with its hot springs. In the southwest of the municipality is the glacier Langjöküll.

The highland road leading from Kjölur Hveravelir through the entire municipality to neighboring Blönduós. East of the river Blanda Kjölur, a 57 -acre reservoir Blöndulón is dammed. Another waters is the Hóp lagoon lake, which lies on the border with the neighboring community of western Hunathing vestra. East of Hóp is the eponymous Lake Húnavatn.

In the north of the municipality is the lake Svínavatn, which is by the river Svínadalsá flowing through the Svínadalur fed. West of the lake, the solid Vatnsdalsfjall and Vatnsdalur is.

Surrounding municipalities are in the north Blönduós, vestra the east Skagafjordur, in the south Bláskógabyggð, southwest Borgarbyggð, in the west Hunathing.

History

The parish was formed on 1 January 2006 by the merger of four rural communities Sveinsstaðahreppur, Torfalækjarhreppur, Svínavatnshreppur and Bólstaðarhlíðarhreppur.

The municipality had Áshreppur on 1 December 2005 nor 66 inhabitants and closed on 10 June 2006 with the community Húnavatn ( Húnavatnshreppur ) under whose name together. The main industry is agriculture.

Þingeyrar

In Þingeyrar on the east side of the Hóp ( and on the west side of the Húnavatn ) the first monastery of Iceland was founded in the early 12th century. It was abandoned in 1550 and was thus the longest existing monastery Islands. The current church, which Þingeyrakirkja, dates from the 19th century, it was inaugurated in 1877.

Population Development

As in many communities Islands population growth was in Húnavatn after years of population decline again in 2006 to determine the 2007 discontinued sat down.

Traffic

In the north of the municipal territory of Hringvegur of Hóp runs southeast over after Blönduós, from where he later again through the municipal area (northeast of Svínavatn ) leads to Varmahlíð.
