Hwang Sun-mi

Hwang Sun -mi (* 1963 in Hongseong ) is a South Korean children's book author.

Life

Hwang Sun -mi was born in 1963 in Hongseong. Born into a poor family, it was her not have been possible at that time to go to the middle school. However you got from a sympathetic teacher the key to the classroom and was able to read books and learn independently. She managed thereby to high school and studied creative writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts, the Gwangju University and at the Graduate School of Chung- Ang University. Her literary debut was relatively late in 1995. She completed her studies without having taken part in writing competitions. Only when she raised them their two sons, she began to publish. She is a professor at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.

Hwang Sun -mi writes about everyday problems of children and sees her books as a source of courage and hope to survive these problems. Inspiration for their stories, the author of her two sons. Among her publications there are animal stories, fantasy stories, as well as realistic stories about the school, even though they themselves did not go to middle school. Very well known in South Korea is their story The Trouble with Jonko ( 나쁜 어린이 표 ) that arises on the side of children who have been treated unfairly by teachers. Another well-known book by Hwang Sun -Mi, The day I hide my diary ( 일기 감추는 날 ), is about a child who fears inconvenience when teachers, friends and family read his school diary and learn the truth about his thoughts. But since he does not want to lie, he hides his diary ( Korean children have in school as a daily homework a diary lead ). Hwang has sold over a million books and their works have been translated into numerous languages. In addition, it puppet theater, musicals and cartoons were produced. The story of the chicken who dreamed of flying ( 마당 을 나온 암탉 ) was made into an animated film in 2011 and was a box office hit in South Korea.
