Blueberry Palpenspanner ( Hydriomena furcata )

The blueberry Palpenspanner ( Hydriomena furcata ) is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of the tensioner ( Geometridae ).

Features

The wingspan of the butterfly is 23 to 35 millimeters. The drawing and coloring of the species is very variable, some specimens show gray-green hues others are reddish brown in color. Pine buttons are shorter than 1.5 times the eye diameter.

The caterpillars are colored dark gray dorsally and ventrally dark red. They have white side stripes. The young caterpillars spin shoot tips together. Half to all adult caterpillars rest during the day usually between spun together leaves of food plant - mostly blueberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus) or goat willow (Salix caprea ).

Similar Species

The most important distinguishing feature is the dark approaches the transverse lines on the front edge of the front wing, which can be clearly seen especially on the bottom. Typical are often in the middle of Submarginalregion bright spots in the Postdiskalregion sometimes a larger bright spot. The immense variability in drawing and coloring meant that furcata at Hydriomena many taxonomically worthless forms have been described. The blueberry Palpenspanner soaked despite its very large variability of the two similar species Hydriomena ruberata and Hydriomena impluviata so much in the drawing system from that even dark shapes are determined. The blueberry Palpenspanner is restless drawn as the alder Palpenspanner ( Hydriomena impluviata ) who flies even earlier (May- July).

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The blueberry Palpenspanner is common in blueberry forests and sub-alpine moorland and montane regions. The total distribution extends from the Iberian Peninsula over Western and Central Europe east to East Asia. The type is also available in North America.

Biology

The main flight period of the butterfly extends into southern Germany from mid-July to early August. The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and fly into the light. The females lay their eggs mostly in small groups on the lower leaf surface of blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus). The caterpillars feed on Vaccinium sp. and willow (Salix sp.), hazel (Corylus avellana ), rose (Rosa sp.), aspen (Populus tremula ), etc. The egg or the already developed in the egg and caterpillar hibernates is fully grown in May. She lives in a housing composed of woven leaves.
