Hypoxia-induced factor (HIF ) is a transcription factor that regulates the supply to the cell with oxygen by establishing a balance between the oxygen demand and oxygen supply. HIF is composed of a labile α - subunit, which exists in three isoforms of HIF - 1α, HIF- 2α and HIF- 3α, and a β subunit.

With normal oxygen supply ( normoxia ) is hydroxylated the α - subunit of prolyl- specific two residues. This hydroxylation results in HIFα is degraded over the Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor protein.

With a lack of oxygen supply ( hypoxia) is inhibited hydroxylation of HIF- α. The thus stabilized transcription factor activates the erythropoietin gene, and a number of other genes which are required to adapt the cell to an insufficient oxygen supply.
