Species

Rain Both identified based on body proportions, gills and scales the number and geographic distribution in 1996, six species in Thailand: H. lagleri, H. malcolmi, H. salweenensis, H. suvattii, H. and H. vernayi wetmorei. A recent study (2001) of Sunairattanaporn has six species in the genus Thailand Hypsibarbus: H. lagleri, H. pierrei, H. salweenensis, H. tenasserimensis, H. and H. vernayi wetmorei, also based on their morphological appearance, body proportions such as dandruff number. H. suvattii as a synonym of H. lagleri, H. malcolmi as a synonym of H. pierrei and H. tenasserimensis as a new species.

The following species are currently expected to genus Hypsibarbus:

  • Hypsibarbus annamensis
  • Hypsibarbus lagleri
  • Hypsibarbus macrosquamatus
  • Hypsibarbus malcolmi
  • Diamond bar ( Hypsibarbus pierrei )
  • Hypsibarbus salweenensis
  • Hypsibarbus suvattii
  • Vernayi Hypsibarbus
  • Hypsibarbus wetmorei

Description

Fishes of the genus Hypsibarbus are characterized by an elongated, compact body and large scales. Staining, morphological proportions, number of gill cover, the Einsägung the dorsal fin and the number of scales determined this genus. The header length is greater than its head height.

Occurrence and habitat

Representatives of Hypsibarbus prefer to live in large lowland rivers of Southeast Asia with coarse, sandy subsoil. Waters with fine substrate such as reservoirs with clay or clay ground offer the genus no optimal living conditions. Ideal habitats offer the river system of the Mekong, Chao Phraya, Meklong or the Khorat Plateau in Thailand. They prefer wooded river sections.

Way of life

During the dry season the fish live in the main stream, where the water this time of year is relatively clear and flows slowly. During the rainy season the animals migrate in the floodplain forests.
