I Love New York

I Love New York ( German " I Love New York " ) is both slogan and the name of the marketing campaign of the State of New York, and especially New York City.

History

In the 1970s, the Department of Economic Development of the State of New York instructed the resident at Madison Square advertising agency Well, Rich & Greene to develop a marketing campaign to boost tourism in the first place. The city of New York was at that time a stronghold of the violence and drug crime known - during a power outage in 1977, there was large-scale looting that led to 4,500 arrests. After they had agreed on the slogan, the graphic designer Milton Glaser invented in 1975 this right, now world-famous logo on a taxi ride through Manhattan. Glaser himself did not believe in long-term success of the campaign, and took no salary for the development of the logo. In addition, a matching jingle was composed by Steve Karman, for commercials they pledged the actor Frank Langella.

In 1977, the campaign was launched. The logo was distributed on posters throughout the city, through television spots, the campaign was supported.

10 years after the start of the campaign was the state of New York to protect the logo and trademark law began in 1994 in order to grant licenses to companies. 2011 alone was the license revenue 1.83 million U.S. dollars, total the state takes in about $ 30 million by products with the logo. The merchandising portfolio now encompasses a wide variety of products, from the traditional T -shirts and stickers on coffee cups to their own perfume line. Especially popular is the logo in Italy and Japan.

Logo

The logo consists of the letter "I " followed by a red heart and finally " NY " in the serif font American Typewriter.

The success of the album is Glaser mainly due to the fact that it is a rebus, the reader must put together independently to mind. The red heart in turn calls forth emotions in the reader, similar to emoticons of the Internet age.

The envelope with the first draft is now in the possession of the Museum of Modern Art
