Ian Barbour

Ian Graeme Barbour ( born October 5, 1923 in Beijing, † December 24, 2013 in Minneapolis ) was an American physicist and theologian. He is considered the founder of the interdisciplinary compartment science and religion (English Science and Religion ).

Life

Ian G. Barbour was born in 1923 in Beijing and spent his childhood in China, England and the USA. He studied physics at Duke University and later theology at Yale University. In 1955, he founded the Department of Religion at Carleton College and also taught some physics.

In the 1960s, Barbour developed a scientific methodology to the study of the relationship between science and religion. His published work in 1966 Issues in Science and Religion is regarded as the cornerstone of the academic subject " Science and Religion ". In addition, he published several works on ethics and modern technology.

In 1986 he became Professor Emeritus.

In 1999, Barbour was awarded the Templeton Price for Progress in Religion. Almost the entire prize money in the amount of 1.2 million dollars he donated to the Center for Theology and Natural Sciences at the University of Berkeley.
