Ian MacLaurin, Baron MacLaurin of Knebworth

Ian Charter MacLaurin, Baron MacLaurin of Knebworth DL, ( born March 30, 1937 in Blackheath ) is a British businessman, former CEO of Vodafone and the Executive Board and CEO of Tesco. He was on the board of the England and Wales Cricket Board and Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire.

Career

Tesco

MacLaurin started in 1959 as a trainee at Tesco, had a number of executive positions and was appointed in 1970 in the leadership circle. In 1970 he became Managing Director in 1985 and Executive Board.

When he retired in 1997, Tesco had just taken over J Sainsbury and become the UK's largest retailers. MacLaurin evolved away from the philosophy of the company founder, Jack Cohen, large quantities to sell at low prices ( "pile it high, sell it cheap" ). He later said his biggest success was the appointment of the right successor Terry Leahy.

Vodafone

Later he played in the Minor counties cricket league for the Hertfordshire County Cricket Club. From 1997 to 2002 he was chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board and is now Chairman of the Sport Honours Committee. His son Neil MacLaurin played for many years first-class cricket and List A cricket for Middlesex and also played for Hertfordshire.

In 1986 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He was knighted and raised in 1996 as Baron MacLaurin of Knebworth for Life Peer in 1989.

MacLaurin was Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire. He is currently Chairman of the Council of Malvern College.

He is president of The Enterprise Forum, an organization that organizes talks between business and politics.
