Ian Porterfield

John " Ian " Porterfield ( born February 11, 1946 in Dunfermline, † 11 September 2007, Surrey ) was a Scottish football player and football coach.

Career

Playing career

Porterfield began his career at Raith Rovers in Scotland. In 1967 he moved to the south to Sunderland with Sunderland he won the FA Cup in 1973. It Porterfield was in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium scorer decisive 1-0 of the then second division Sunderland against the heavily favored player Leeds United. After ten years with the Black Cats, he became player-manager of Sheffield Wednesday. The coaching job he gave a year later on again.

Coaching career

After end of his career as a player, he became a coach at Rotherham United. After a year in Rotherham, he became a coach at Sheffield United. Porterfield managed to march through the Fourth of English league in the second highest English league. He was released in 1986. From 1986 to 1988, he returned to his native Scotland and oversaw the FC Aberdeen. According to Aberdeen he was a year assistant coach at Chelsea and for one year coach of FC Reading. After the years 1991 to 1993, where he was head coach of the Blues, he went to Asia and Africa to develop the football there. Porterfield was coach of Zambia, Saudi Arabia and Zimbabwe. In January 1996, he returned to the United Kingdom and was an assistant coach at Bolton Wanderers. The Scot was released in May due to a drinking scandal ( drunk driving ), and left his home to Oman, there to train the national team. He also coached the national team of Trinidad and Tobago. In 2003, he became coach of Busan I'Park in South Korea with which it was South Korean Cup winner. From April 2006 until his death was the Scot coach of the Armenian national team.

Disease

In March 2007 she was diagnosed with colon cancer Porterfield. He died on 11 September 2007 at a hospice in Surrey. Porterfield is survived by his wife Glenda.
