IBM Workplace

IBM Workplace is an Office software for corporate networks, similar to the Sun ONE Webtop.

All marketing activities for the product have been set by the manufacturer IBM on December 11, 2007. Some parts of the code have been incorporated into the IBM product " IBM Lotus QuickR ", " IBM Lotus Connections " and others.

The "Productivity Tools" IBM Workplace based on the source code of OpenOffice.org version 1.0. The code has been rewritten while fundamentally and now uses parts of the Eclipse framework.

IBM Workplace is not free software as opposed to OpenOffice.org. According to IBM, it is not possible to return the more developed code to the OpenOffice.org project since it technically very different from the original code base.

The use of the OpenOffice.org code without publication of further developments is possible because IBM uses the code based on the SISSL license from SUN. These forces, however, IBM for compatibility with some core technologies of OpenOffice.org; among other things, the XML file format, from which arose the Open Document Format. This standard is now being used as of version 2.5 also IBM Workplace.

Since early 2005, some IBM Workplace developer members of the Technical Committee, which is responsible for the development and standardization of the OpenDocument format are ( OASIS ).
