Formation and development

ICLEI was founded as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives at the end of the First World Congress of local communities for sustainable development in September 1990 at the United Nations in New York. 2003, the General Assembly ( Council) approved the renaming in ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability. The headquarters of the Organization is Bonn.

The World Secretariat of the New World Cities Association took in August 1991 in Toronto (Canada) on his work, at the same time the European Secretariat was established in Freiburg. Meanwhile, ICLEI is represented with twelve offices in ten locations on all continents.

Purpose

The mission statement of the organization is to build a worldwide movement of local and support to get through the entirety of local activities tangible improvements in global sustainability - to achieve - with special focus on the global environment.

Constitution and organization

The association is a democratically authored member association of municipalities ( cities, towns, districts, municipal associations and similar bodies). The number of memberships has increased almost linearly since inception. The organization had the end of 2010 some 1,250 members in 70 countries.

Organs

The organs of the Association of Local Authorities ICLEI are:

  • Council ( Council), which every three years passing world General Assembly
  • Board of Directors ( Executive Committee ) of 21 elected and two ex -officio members, the regional composition reflects the geographical distribution of members
  • Consulting circuit ( Advisory Council ) from personalities of the international public life
  • Secretary-General, as the executive organ
