Ida Marie Lipsius
Ida Marie Lipsius, also known as La Mara ( born December 30, 1837 in Leipzig, † March 2, 1927 in Schmölen ) was a German writer and music historian.
Life
The daughter of the theologian and rector of the St. Thomas School Karl Heinrich Adelbert Lipsius grew up in Leipzig and received a musical education, including through the Leipzig composer Richard Müller. 1856 she met nineteen egg a concert Franz Liszt know, whose close circle of friends she counted henceforth and whose work she accompanied literary. In the late 19th and early 20th century it played a significant role in the German music scene, especially in the Grand Duke of Weimar court as well as in a circle around Richard Wagner in Bayreuth. With Liszt's companion, the Princess Carolyne zu Sayn -Wittgenstein, she was in close contact. For her eightieth birthday in 1917, she was awarded the title of professor.
Work
Besides some travel books she published as a music writer under the pseudonym of La Mara numerous monographs on ancient and contemporary composers, for the first time in Westermann's Monatshefte 1867. Their concise, nuanced and based on thorough knowledge of the sources portraits, each first musical in the series studies of heads published by Breitkopf & Hartel appeared, were at that time often placed next to the historic content and convey a true picture of the society of their time. Its present importance is primarily due to that the author knew many of her sitters personally.
Marie Lipsius was the first musicologist, the operational systematic research to identify Beethoven's mysterious " Immortal Beloved ": 1909, she published Therese Brunsviks memoirs and interpreted the enthusiasm contained therein for the composer as a secret love. However, they corrected this view after the First World War, when she found letters and other documents in the estate of Brunsviks that pointed to Therese's sister Josephine Brunsvik.
Marie Lipsius also emerged as an editor of the Correspondence of Franz Liszt. In 1917 her autobiography.
