Ignacio Zuloaga

Ignacio Zuloaga y Zabaleta ( born July 26, 1870 in Éibar, † October 31, 1945 in Madrid) was a Spanish painter of Impressionism.

Life

Ignacio Zuloaga was the son of a goldsmith Plácido Zuloaga and his wife Lucía Zamora Zabaleta. He got a acted education with the Jesuits. In 1891 he went to Rome to study architecture, but a short time later he decided to turn to painting. A year later he went to study at the École des Beaux -Arts in Paris. In Montmartre Zuloaga rented a studio, where he also lived. Within a short time he became acquainted with the most famous artists of the city, including Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Auguste Rodin and Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec. After returning to his homeland in 1899, Ignacio Zuloaga had found his style in the Spanish tradition, which resembled the work of Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbarán, El Greco and Francisco de Goya.

On May 18, 1899 Zuloaga married in Madrid Venentine Dethomas, the sister of his friend and painter Maxime Dethomas. From the joint connecting two children Lucía ( born May 15, 1902) and Antonio went, ( born January 10, 1906), out.

His portrait with Basque hat appears on a 500 - Pesetas banknote, Madrid 22 de Julio de 1954; the reverse shows a view of Toledo (after Zuloaga )
