Ignatius IV of Antioch

Ignatius IV Hazim ( born July 2, 1921 as Habib Hazim in Mhardeh near Hama, Syria, † December 5, 2012 in Beirut ) was the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and spiritual leader of the Orthodox Church of Antioch ( Rum Orthodox Church ).

Life

He came from a Christian Arab family from the region of Hama. Since his childhood, he was in the service of the Church. He studied literature in Beirut since 1945 and theology at St. Serge Institute in Paris. After returning to the East, he founded the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Balamand, Lebanon monastery, and worked there as a lecturer and dean. In 1961 he was appointed Bishop of Latakia, Syria, was appointed in 1970 and elevated to the Metropolitan. Since 2 July 1979, he served as Patriarch until his death on December 5, 2012, and was considered 170th successor to the Apostle Peter to the Chair of Antioch.

During his tenure, Ignatius IV tried Christianity in Syria and Lebanon to strengthen. Inner Ecclesiastical he sat down one particularly for frequent Holy Communion of the faithful.

Patriarch Ignatius supported the ecumenical goals of justice and peace, and worked in the Christian Peace Conference with (CFRP ), he participated in the II Allchristlichen Peace Convocation in 1964 in Prague. In 2010 he received the Order of Friendship.
