Ignaz von Olfers

Ignaz Franz Werner von Olfers Maria ( born August 30, 1793 in Münster ( Westphalia ), † April 23, 1871 in Berlin) was a German scientist and diplomat. Most recently, he was Director General of the Royal Museums of Berlin.

Family

He was the son of Privy Councillor Franz Theodor von Olfers. He married on 3 December 1823 in Berlin Hedwig v. Staegemann ( 1799-1891 ), the daughter of the poet, jurist and Prussian State Council Friedrich August von Staegemann ( 1763-1840 ) and Elisabeth Fischer Est Graun ( 1761-1835 ). The marriage produced four children:

  • Nina von Olfers (1824-1901), married. Yorck von Wartenberg (1805-1865)
  • Marie von Olfers (1826-1924), poet
  • Hedwig von Olfers (1829-1919), married. Heinrich Abeken
  • Ernst von Olfers (1840-1915), medical officer, Mr. on Metgethen, father of Sibylle von Olfers, Werner von Olfers (1870-1901) and Benedict v. Olfers (1872-1919)

Life

Ignaz von Olfers studied at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg, where he became in 1819 a member of the Corps Guestphalia Heidelberg. He was a medical doctor and counselor of legation in the Prussian legation in Naples. After a long stay in Brazil, the scientific research was based, it was built in 1831 Prussian envoy in Bern.

With the assistance of Wilhelm von Humboldt and his brother Ignaz von Olfers Alexander was appointed in 1839 as Director General of the Royal Museums in Berlin. He was one of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV closest confidants and for this important addition to Alexander von Humboldt liaison to the natural sciences and the fine arts. Olfers planned and designed with the architect Friedrich August Stiller rebuilding the Museum Island in Berlin.

1854 Olfers honorary member of the founded in 1853 Catholic Reading Association (now KStV Askania Burgundia ) Berlin, the first corporation in KV. In 1856 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

As a result of a dispute with Gustav Friedrich scales, the former director of the Royal Picture Gallery, about the failed restoration of an image of Andrea del Sarto, Olfers suffered a stroke. After five years sickbed Olfers died in 1872 in Berlin and was buried at the Old Cathedral Cemetery of St. Hedwig's Church.
