IJsselmonde (island)

IJsselmonde is a river island in the Dutch province of South Holland in the Rhine -Meuse delta between the Nieuwe Maas, Noord and Oude Maas in the province of South Holland.

A large part of the north of the island take a harbor of Rotterdam and the residential areas of Rotterdam -South. This also includes the formerly independent village IJsselmonde. The island was once a rich agricultural region; now lying on her next to the metropolis mainly bedroom communities like Albrandswaard, Barendrecht, Hendrik -Ido- Ambacht, Ridderkerk, and Zwijndrecht, only the central South has maintained some of its rural character. The Zwijndrechtse Waard ( Waard ≈ Werder ), lies on the Zwijndrecht, was originally an independent river island, separated by IJsselmonde through the western section of the Waal. After the two ends of the Waal were closed, it is now considered part of IJsselmonde.

Running through IJsselmonde in the east from north to south of the high speed line HSL Zuid ( high-speed line Antwerp - Schiphol ). It crosses here with the Betuweroute from the port of Rotterdam to Zevenaar.
