The World on the Moon is a comic opera ( dramma giocoso ) in three acts by Joseph Haydn. According to some sources, Carlo Goldoni wrote the libretto. According to other sources, a stranger has just edited a libretto by Carlo Goldoni had written for the composer Baldassare Galuppi. The work was premiered on August 3, 1777 at the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt. Mark Lothar designed the new plant in 1931 to an opera in a prologue and two acts. In this version of the work first came on March 20, 1932 in Schwerin on stage. The following article deals with this version, which has largely prevailed on the German stage. The Overture Haydn used with a slightly modified circuit as a first set of 63 symphony.

The young Leandro is up to his ears in Clarissa, the daughter of the wealthy merchant Buonafede, in love. However, this rejects his wooing categorically. Fortunately, Leandros servant Cecco has met a doctor from Bologna, who promises him help.
Buonafede loves it at night to watch the sky. It has done this to him especially the moon. Too much he knew, how it can probably live up there. Since it is him just right that the doctor from Bologna to sell him a telescope with which he can see from the Earth's natural satellite, the smallest details. The result surprised Buonafede. The doctor digs deeper and tells the merchant that he could fly to the moon. If he wanted to come along, he is welcome. Buonafede is enthusiastic about the plan and agrees. Secretly, the doctor administered his victim a nightcap. As this is effective, Buonafede is shipped to the doctor's garden.
A machine produces lightning and thunder. Buonafede awakened. Now he is tricked, he finds it on the moon. But the world on the moon is anything but beautiful. Buonafede must watch as a couple in love evil forces escapes and is separated thereby. The girl desperately plunges into the Moon River. As her lover comes in and feels that he is no longer able to save his beloved, he is insane.
Actually, this theater should have intended that Buonafede expires in emotion and the young couple left his blessing, but Buonafede is anything but stirred. It has almost Cecco, who plays the ruler of the moon, so from his role that Buonafede recognizes dizziness, has played to him. Now he is even more unforgiving than before.
