Ilie Năstase

Ilie Năstase ( born July 19, 1946 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian tennis player, politician and sports official.

He was one of the top 10 players in the 1970s. In the years 1972 and 1973 he led the world tennis rankings.

Overall, he won 57 singles titles, including the title at the U.S. Open in 1972 and French Open 1973. In doubles, he won in 1973 in Wimbledon, in 1970 at the French Open and the U.S. Open in 1975. He lost at Wimbledon 1972 singles final against Stan Smith and 1976 against Bjorn Borg. He also won four times the Masters (1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975). He is the most successful Romanian tennis player.

Năstase was in the 1990s in politics and was a candidate on behalf of the Social Democrat Partidul unsuccessfully for the office of mayor of Bucharest. Then he retired from politics.

In May 1997, he was elected president of the Romanian Tennis Federation and 2001 and confirmed in February 2005 in office. During this time he tried to set up a tennis academy in Bucharest. After a court ruling unfavorable to him as well as allegations of waste of Association funds he entered on 12 February 2008 from his post back.

In 2006 he was in the feature film Monday, the window by Ulrich Köhler come to see as a performer.
