Illhorn

The Illhorn is a mountain above the resort Chandolin in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. The peak with an altitude of 2'716 m above sea level. M. is the northernmost peak in the mountain range of the Les Diablons about the Bella Tola for Illhorn which the Val d' Anniviers separates from Turtmanntal and is also the language border. In the south of Illhorns is the small Illstausee. The Illhorn is some 7 km from the 533 meter high Sierre.

From Illhorn itself offers excellent views of the Mont Blanc in the west over the Bietschhorn, the Bernese Alps to the Valais four -thousanders with the White Horn, the Zinalrothorn, the Dent Blanche and the Matterhorn.

The ascent from Chandolin done with the chair lift to the mountain station at 2,580 m above sea Tsapé. M.. The subsequent walk via the Pas de l' Illsee takes about 40 minutes. In winter, a ski lift carries skiers to just below the summit.

From the summit, the terrain falls steeply into the more than 1,500 meters below Illgraben and the Pfynwald in the Rhone Valley. The Illgraben is considered one of the most geologically unstable valleys in Switzerland. The strong erosion makes a plant growth impossible.
