Ilpo Seppälä

Ilpo Kalervo Seppälä ( born October 16, 1953 in Vitasaari ) is a former Finnish wrestler. He won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman bantamweight in the World Cup 1981.

Career

Ilpo Seppäla began as a teenager when Ringer Club Riihimäen Kisko with the rings. Later he moved hum club Helsingin Tarmon. He wrestled at national competitions in two styles, Greco-Roman style and free style. For international championships, where he was employed from 1977, he wrestled exclusively in the Greco- Roman style.

His first medal at the Finnish Veterans Championships he won in 1970, when he finished 3rd place in the Flyweight, Greco-Roman style. He was there only 16 years old. Finnish Champion, he was first in 1975. He won it in free style at featherweight before Jussi Vesterinen and Hannu Övermark. Overall, he won four Finnish championship titles in his career.

He celebrated in 1971 in Helsinki His first international success. He was there Nordic Junior Champion in Greco -Roman style bantamweight. During his military service he won in 1974 at the CISM Military World Championships in Rome in Featherweight, Greco-Roman style, behind the Italian Domenico Giuffrida the silver medal.

In 1977 he was first employed in a European Championship. In Bursa, he came here in the featherweight with two wins and two defeats on the 7th Place. At the World Championships this year in Gothenburg he scored three victories, where he among other things, Defeated Stylianos Migiakis from Greece. From Nelson Dawidjan from the USSR and Lars Malmkvist from Sweden but he was beaten and got away with it on the 6th Place.

Use at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow missed Ilpo Seppälä, because he lost to Hannu Övermark at the Finnish Championships in Greco-Roman style in featherweight.

After a long break he came then again at the World Championships 1981 in Oslo used. He had this abtrainiert in the bantamweight. A measure which was successful, because he won there over Peter Balow from Bulgaria, Ilya Rostovtsev from the USSR, Benni Ljungbeck from Sweden and in the pool finale even Pasquale Passarelli from the FRG, however, was before this fight already pool winner and therefore in could conserve fight against Seppälä. Against Antonio Caltabiano lost Ilpo Seppälä. With these results, it was bronze medalist behind Pasquale Passarelli and Joseph Krysta from Czechoslovakia.

In three subsequent starts even at international championships Ilpo Seppälä then won no medals. At the World Championship 1983 in Kiev, he came bantamweight only on the 10th Place. At the European Championships in 1984 in Jönköping, he defeated after all, the eventual champion Patrice Mourier from France, but was defeated by Benni Ljungbeck and Pasquale Passarelli, which earned him the 7th Place. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles he disappointed, because he lost to the underdog Ronny Sidge from Norway and again against Benni Ljungbeck and finished only 11th place.

Then Ilpo Seppälä ended his international career Ringer. But he is still active and a very successful wrestler at the Masters ( from 35 years). Professionally, he has worked in the financial industry.
