Ilya Segalovich

Ilya Valentinovich Segalowitsch (Russian Илья Валентинович Сегалович; * September 13, 1964 in Gorky, † July 27, 2013 in London) was a Russian computer scientist and entrepreneur.

Together with Arkady Wolosch and Jelena Kolmanowskaja he founded the Internet company Yandex, which today is the market leader in Russia in the field of Internet search. From 2000 to 2013 he was its CTO.

Life and career

Ilya Segalowitsch (now Nizhny Novgorod ) born in 1964 in Gorky. From 1981 to 1986 he studied geophysics in Moscow.

After his studies began in 1990 with the Segalowitsch IT companies "Arkadia " work. In 1993 he founded together with his school friend Arkady Wolosch the company COMPTEK where Segalowitsch developed the electronic retrieval system. In COMPTEK finally came in 1997, a year before Google, the Internet search engine Yandex. After these quickly gained popularity, and Segalowitsch Wolosch eventually founded in 2000 an independent company Yandex. Within a few years Yandex became the market leader in Russia, and to a billion dollar enterprise. Segalowitsch remained until his death, technical director of the company and moreover managed the launch of numerous new products Yandex.

The brand name Yandex said to have been suggested by Segalowitsch.

In July 2013 Ilja Segalowitsch died in a hospital in London. Cause of death was meningitis, which was triggered by a long-standing cancer. He left behind his wife Maria and four children.
