In convertendo Dominus

In convertendo Dominus ( When the Lord brought the exiles of Zion applied ), Op 32, is a psalm setting from 1926 by Jules Van Nuffel for mixed choir and organ.

History

Van Nuffel set to music many Latin texts, including ten Psalms for the Liturgy and the concert at the Sint- Rombouts Kathedraal in Mechelen, where he was cantor and worked with the organist Flor Peeters. The counting of the Latin psalms differs from that of the translation unit, the Latin Psalm 125 Psalm 126 corresponds Add convertendo Dominus Van Nuffel him set to music in 1926 for a mixed choir of four to eight voices and organ.

His work was published in 1950 publishing in Schwann who also brought out another seven psalm compositions Van Nuffels.

Words and Music

The one-movement composition by approximately 9 minutes in C-sharp minor is divided into sections according to the meaning of different character. The first line of the psalm is enlarged again at the end.

Verses 5 and 6 were set to music by Brahms A German Requiem: " They that sow in tears shall reap in joy ."

In Van Nuffels setting the organ plays an important independent role. It presents the first theme, which is in convertendo Dominus taken over by the tenor of the words and repeated by three female voices. It appears slightly altered in part B on Converte Domine, and at the beginning of the recapitulation A ' as in the beginning, however, referred to in unison of all votes fff. A solo section of the organ is derived from a high point at the end of Part B, the quiet beginning of C above. Wearing the sheaves (D) is characterized by a double choir; the four -way split women's voices on the one hand, the old and the four men's voices on the other hand alternately sing the same pattern in rising pitch. the section ends in eight parts.
