In the Land of Grey and Pink is the third studio album by British progressive rock band Caravan. It appeared in 1971 in Deram Records, and is considered a classic of the Canterbury sound.

Creation and publication

The album was recorded at the end of 1970 to early 1971 in the AIR Taken London studios and the studios of Decca Records and released in September 1971 on the Decca label associated with Deram. In the Land of Grey and Pink 's latest album Caravans is the original lineup since Dave Sinclair left the band in 1971 still initially and then continued to work with Robert Wyatt. In the Land of Grey and Pink was first released in 1989 on CD. Remastered versions of unreleased bonus tracks and alternative versions appeared in 2001 and 2011, the latter with a surround mix by Steven Wilson.

Style

Caravan play on the album melodic, from Canterbury sound influenced progressive rock. The guitar is facing organ, flute and saxophone rather in the background, it can be found influences from Folk, Easy Listening and improvisation music. The humorous lyrics and artwork are pervaded by pastoral and fantastic designs.

Reception

In the Land of Grey and Pink Although could not place in the charts, Caravan helped but still a breakthrough. Today, the album is considered a masterpiece of the band and timeless classic of the Canterbury sound. The music magazine eclipsed judges, long live " from a feel-good factor that puts one in awe " and chose it on the 31st place its list of the 150 most important prog albums.
