Independent Senate Group

The Onafhankelijke Senaatsfractie ( Dutch for "Independent Senate Group ") is a fraction in the First Chamber of the Dutch Parliament. There is a delegate to represent the interests of smaller parties. " Senate " is an unofficial term for the First Chamber.

Origins and history

Members of the First Chamber are elected by the provincial legislatures. Because some smaller parties alone do not have enough votes for its own MPs, they choose together a list whose representatives occur in the first chamber as Independent Senate Group. This first took place in 1995. At that time, Marten Bierman of the micro Party De Groenen was (not to be confused with Groen Links ) selected in the First Chamber. Bierman was re- elected in 1999, and in the elections of 2003 and 2007, Henk ten Hoeve from the Fryske Nasjonale Partij ( Frisian National Party ) were elected. Since 2011 Kees de Lange (of 50PLUS ) OSF Senator. The Group has so far consisted of only one deputy each. Since the First Chamber de facto much less power than the second, and as the deputies are only working part-time, the influence of the OSF is low in every respect.
