Indiana Dunes State Park

The Indiana Dunes State Park is located near Porter, 76 kilometers east of Chicago on the southern edge of Lake Michigan. It is spread over 8.8 km ². The park was established in 1925 and is thus one of the first to have been included in Indiana's state park system. As in all State Parks an admission fee is charged.

Hoist formed beaches on the shore of Lake Michigan, which were transformed with the lowering of the lake level at the end of the Ice Age in dunes. The Indiana Dunes were long lounge of Indian tribes such as the Potawatomi and Miami. They served as trade routes between tribes of the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes.
