A compact campus with excellent laboratory and clinical infrastructure is the guarantee for a successful present and promising future of research in Innsbruck. 1993 in Innsbruck, Austria's first special research program " Biological Communications Systems " established. In 2003 he was a second special research program on " cellular proliferation and cell death in tumors ." Together with the University of Innsbruck operates the Medical University of Innsbruck since 2010, the Special Research Area "Cellular signaling pathways in chronic diseases of the central nervous system ." In the field of cancer research, there is a close cooperation with the Tyrolean Cancer Research Institute and the Centre of Excellence Oncotyrol created in 2008. Currently, research is being conducted at the Medical University of Innsbruck on the following topics intensive:

  • Oncology
  • Neuroscience
  • Genetics, Epigenetics and Genomics
  • Infectious diseases, Immunology & Organ and Tissue Repair

The scientific research at the Medical University of Innsbruck is both nationally and internationally very successful in the highly competitive area of research funding.

Patient care

In the care of patients Innsbruck Medical University works closely with the State of Tyrol and its corresponding institutions. It will take a major from the Tyrolean Hospital Ges.mbH ( Tilak ) supports with its logistics and its state hospitals.

Scientific misconduct

In 2007, researchers reported at the urologist Hannes Strasser, Medical University of Innsbruck in medical journals that they had successfully treated with stem cells incontinence. In the treatment of patients however, there were failures, whereupon the latter sued the university clinic for pain and suffering in April 2008. In the subsequent investigation of the studies presented, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety firmly serious flaws in the studies. Thus, the required approvals have not been obtained from ethics committees, patients would not have known that the treatment was experimental and had not been insured. Furthermore, some of the documents submitted were forged and the study as well as methodological problems. The journal Nature called it " the greatest case of scientific misconduct in Austria ".

Shortly after the announcement of the Rector of the Medical University, Clemens Sorg was recalled by the University Council on 21 August 2008. While the University denies that the dismissal in connection with the fraud scandal is to go see some papers assume that Sorg was deposed because of his will to provide for education. After Hannes Strasser had been released after the announcement of the forgery scandal, you had to ask the Chair to the Medical University of Innsbruck again available to it under a court ruling in 2011.

In order to cope better scientific misconduct in the future, the Innsbruck Medical University has set up on the initiative of the University Council, an independent " Scientific Integrity Board ". Members are the President of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences, Peter Suter, Christine Mann holder of the Medical University of Vienna and Peter Schick of the University of Graz.
