Seat

The headquarters of the Institute is located in Wellington. In addition to the Kenepuru Science Centre in Wellington, the ESR operates three other research centers distributed across the country: a) Mount Albert Science Centre in Auckland, b ) the Christchurch Science Centre, Christchurch and the ESR NCBID - Wallace Ville in Upper Hutt.

History

In the 1980s the New Zealand government began the research and science to restructure. In 1989, for the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology created (Ministry of Research, Science and Technology) with the aim to advise the government to prepare decision-making processes to prioritize resources allocations and introduce the performance review. But that's not enough. They wanted to create separate institutions that should do business independently and autonomously under government supervision and would then do under these conditions with its own rules and guidelines performance-related public and private sector jobs for a variety of tasks.

With the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992 ten Crown Research Institutes were established for this purpose, first, one of which still exist today, eight institutes. ESR is one.

With the Companies Act 1993, all institutions were converted to limited liability companies ( Limited). The ESR is today, like all other Crown Research Institutes also, the Crown Company Unit ( controlling and advisory department ) Ministry of Finance and the Minister responsible for Research, Science and Technology assumed. Both the responsible Ministers are also interestingly always registered as a shareholder in each of the eight Crown Research Institutes.
