International Congress of Americanists

The International Congress of Americanists (ICA ) (Spanish: Congreso Internacional de American fashionistas ) is a multidisciplinary scientific conference, which takes place regularly in Europe and America since 1875. The term American is in this case based on the total American continent. The aim of the foundation event by the Paris Societe Americaine de France on 25 August 1874 was to " contribute to the development of ethnographic, linguistic and historical studies of the Americas, especially for the period before Columbus ."

The represented at the Congress disciplines and subjects are anthropology, archeology, art, education, economics, geography, history, human rights, law, philosophy, linguistics, sociology, and urban studies.

As part of the 1988 Congress held in Amsterdam, the foundation stone for the Latin American Information Network REDIAL was laid.

The 53rd International Congress of Americanists was held from July 19 to 24, 2009 in Mexico City and was organized by the Universidad Iberoamericana. The 54th International Congress of Americanists will be held in Vienna from 15 to 20 July 2012 and will be hosted by the University of Vienna, the Austrian Latin America Institute and the Vienna Museum of Ethnology.
