International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

1992 declared the United Nations General Assembly, 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In its resolution of 22 December she was pleased that some non-governmental organizations commit to the initiative of the International Movement ATD Fourth World these days in numerous countries.

This NGO connected with the " International Day for the Eradication of Poverty " three concerns:

  • Tribute to the resistance of the people affected by poverty to misery and exclusion
  • The needy and marginalized people heard and get into conversation with them
  • Be used with the poorest ensure that the rights of all are really for all

An inscription in one of the marble slabs on the field of human rights ( Trocadero ) in Paris is reminiscent of the origin of this Memorial and Day of Action:

17. October 1987. Human rights defenders from around the world have gathered in this square. You have proven to the victims of hunger, ignorance and violence honor. You have given expression to their belief that misery is not immutable. They have expressed their solidarity with all those people, the fight anywhere in the world for eliminating poverty.

" Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty. " Father Joseph Wresinski
