Intersputnik

Inter Sputnik satellite is an international organization founded on 15 November 1971 in Moscow by a treaty of the nine former socialist countries within the Organisation of the CMEA. Task was and is the development and sharing of communications satellites. The counterpart of the Western States Intelsat

The GDR joined Inter at Sputnik as a founding member in 1972 and participated in inter- Sputnik program. An earth station has been operated as an earth station Neu Golm 1975 in Neu Golm near Bad Saarow in Brandenburg. It was used for the transmission of telephone conversations, telegraph, radio and television over the satellite network.

Meanwhile, 26 states Member of Inter Sputnik - the Federal Republic of Germany as legal successor of GDR. The Federal Republic of Germany is the only "western " country member. Inter Sputnik is a commercially oriented organization nowadays. It operates 12 satellites in Earth orbit and 41 transponders. In June 1997 Inter- Sputnik -founded with Lockheed Martin joint venture Lockheed Martin Intersputnik (LMI ) based in London, that builds the satellites of the same name and operates.
