Inukjuak, Quebec

Inukjuaq is with about 1,600 inhabitants, is the second largest Inuit settlement in the region of Nunavik, administrative region of Nord- du- Québec. This Inuktitut name means " Big Man" ( giant). The village lies on the east coast of Hudson Bay on the northern shore of the estuary of the river Rivière Innuksuac.

Along the river Innuksuac were many relics that indicate several millennia back reaching settlement.

At the beginning of the 20th century, when there was a geological research camp here and the French fur trading company Révillon Frères 1902 established a trading post, the neighborhood of the present settlement at first was called Port Harrison. 1920 established the Hudson 's Bay Company trading post. The competition between the two companies lasted until 1936. Then the Hudson Bay Company Révillon Frères bought up, thus gaining a monopoly that was eventually broken with the opening of a supermarket by an Inuit cooperative in 1962.

In 1927, the Anglican Church a mission station. In 1935 a post office and a police station, an infirmary in 1947 and 1951 finally a school were established. 1953 moved the federal government several families against their will over 1000 kilometers to the north in the towns of Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord in order with the aim to show in the High Arctic flag. Only in 1996 granted the state the affected family for the hardships resulting financial compensation.

An important economic role played by the Inuit art for Inukjuaq. Artists such as Levi Amidlak ( born 1931 ), Jimmy Inaruli Arnamissak (* 1946), Elisapee Inukpuk (* 1938), Johnny Inukpuk ( 1911-2007 ) have a good reputation with collectors.
