Ioan Bob

Ioan Bob, Latinized Joannes Babb, ( born October 14, 1739 Orman, County Doboka, Grand Principality of Transylvania; † October 2, 1830 in Blaj ), was Romanian Greek- Catholic Bishop of Fagaras.

Life

The noble son of Andrei Bob from Copalnic - Manastur and his wife nee Timandi attended primary school in Cluj, graduated from high school with the Jesuits in Cluj. In 1764 he entered as a novice one at the Basilian. On December 25, 1777 he was ordained a deacon and on 6 April 1778 as Chaplain.

On October 21, 1782 Emperor Joseph II appointed him Bishop of Fagaras. This appointment, Pope Pius VI. He was consecrated on 15 December 1783. 6 June 1784 his who resigned on September 22, 1783 predecessor Bishop Grigore Maior and on 2 July of the same year he was solemnly enthroned in his diocese. He wrote several theological books in Romanian, as well as a Romanian- Hungarian Latin dictionary with 11 000 Romanian words ( Dictionariu romanesc, lateinesc si unguresc, 2 vols, Cluj 1822-1823 ).

Bishop Ioan Bob passed away on October 2, 1830 at the age of 91 years full of achievements for both the Romanian Uniate Church and for the Romanian nation.
