The Ireland West Airport Knock ( IATA: NOC, ICAO: EIKN; Irish Aerfort Iarthar Éireann Chnoc Mhuire ) is a small international commercial airport about 21 kilometers northeast of Knock in County Mayo in northwest Ireland.

History

The airport was opened under the name Horan International Airport in May 1986 on the promotion of economically underdeveloped North West of the Republic of Ireland after a five -year initiative of the priest James Horan first. The name Ireland West Airport Knock has been used since 2005; meantime, the airport was also known as Knock International Airport and Connaught Regional Airport.

Airlines and destinations

Be Flew mainly British targets and holiday destination in the Mediterranean. Largest airline on the ground is Ryanair. As of May 2012, Lufthansa offered in the summer months flights from Dusseldorf Airport to Knock. As of May 2014 German Wings weekly services from Knock airport Cologne / Bonn.

Another important factor are charter flights of about 1.5 million pilgrims who visit the Shrine Knock. Various travel agencies offer the airport also an ideal starting point to fishing areas in the northwest of the country. At the village of Knock ( over 700 inhabitants), there is no rail link. Twice a day there is a bus for the residents working there.
