Irina Meszynski

Irina Meszynski, married Winkler, ( born March 24, 1962 in Berlin) is a former German athlete who had - starting for the GDR - in the discus and as a judoka was successful.

Life

In 1979 she became European Junior Champion, 1982 and 1986, she participated without medal success at the European Championships. In 1987 she reached the fourth place at the Universiade. In 1982, she was DDR Champion ( 67,84 m).

Due to the GDR boycott could not start at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. But on August 17, 1984, she presented in Prague with a width of 73.36 m set a new world record. So she took the end of 2012 still in sixth place of the eternal world leaderboard. Four years later, she reached the fourth place in the qualification of the GDR and therefore was not nominated for the Olympic Games in Seoul.

Irina Meszynski launched for the TSC Berlin, where she was trained by Werner Goldmann. In her competition time, she was 1.76 m tall and 97 kg. In the becoming public knowledge after the fall of documents to the state doping in the GDR was found in the doped athletes also the name of Meszynski.

In 1984 she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

In 1989 she moved to judo. It was 1990, the last East German champion in the heavyweight division and seventh at the European Championships in Frankfurt am Main. She studied law at the Humboldt University Berlin and became a lawyer.
