Irish Orienteering Association

The Irish Orienteering Association (English: Irish Orienteering Association, IOA, Gaelic Cumann na hÉireann Treodóireacht, CTÉ ) is the national Orienteering Association of Ireland. Since 1975 has been a full member of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF ).

It covers all the clubs in the Republic of Ireland, while in Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Orienteering Federation is the British Association of British Orienteering subordinate.

History

Orienteering activities in Ireland began in the early 1970s. 1975 took place the first national championships and the IOA was included in the World Federation IOF.

1998 was the World Cup opener in Killarney to date first and only time an internationally significant competition held in Ireland.

The IOA publishes the magazine, first published in September 1982 The Irish Runner ( TIO ). Prior informed 1977-1982 the club magazine Leinster Orienteering Club newsletter about the development of sport in Ireland.

Awards

The Association annually awards include the following three awards:

  • Silva Trophy, for the further development of orienteering
  • The Mactire Trophy for a performance in an orienteering competition,
  • And the Silva Award for the organization of an orienteering race.
