Isaac ben Jacob Benjacob

Isaac Ben Jacob ( Isaac Benjakob, Frosty Ben Jakob etc.; born January 10, 1801 in Ramygala; † July 2, 1863 in Vilnius ) was a Russian journalist and author and the first modern Hebrew bibliographer.

Life

He lived for some time in Riga, and later in Leipzig and since 1848 in Vilnius. He was an employee of Julius Fürst, was then - after the publication of his first work, a book about Hebrew poetry - publisher of the writings of some old Hebrew writers and worked on a large-scale edition of the Bible with (printed in Hebrew characters ) German translation and beige checked Biuristen comments ( 17 volumes, Vilnius 1848-1853 ), which was of great importance for the cultural development of the Jews of the eastern countries.

1853 brought Isaac Ben Jacob, a newly established and annotated edition of the bibliography Azulais Shem hagedolim out. Ben Jacobs main work is the Ozar hassefarim, thesaurus librorum Hebraeorum tam quam impressorum manuscriptorum, a critical bibliography of all known and important Hebrew Scriptures by the year 1863 - published in Vilna in 1880 after his death by his son Jacob ben Jacob ( 1858-1926 ), for decades in the continuation of his father's work with and continued to work.

Isaac Ben Jacob wrote about it, other writings, a large number of journal articles and left behind extensive unpublished manuscripts for the Hebrew- German dictionaries.
